Why should you check your blood pressure at home?

Your blood pressure can differ throughout the day, depending on your activity levels. So your blood pressure at rest is not the same as after physical exertion. This is why it is not always easy to accurately measure your arterial pressure. One or two measurements taken at different times are not enough to determine it correctly; it is much better to take lots of measurements. Properly measuring your arterial pressure can:

  • Help your doctor recognize whether or not you have hypertension.
  • Assess the efficacy of any treatment and check whether your blood pressure is adequately under control.

When – and how – should you take your blood pressure?

Blood pressure readings should be taken in the morning, before any medication and breakfast, or in the evening before going to bed.

In the morning and evening, repeat the measurement three times at one minute intervals. You don’t need to measure your arterial pressure at any other times of the day because additional measurements would just complicate your doctor’s analysis.

The Withings Blood Pressure Monitor automatically detects and categorises your measurements depending on the time of day they were taken. It also calculates the average reading of your three measurements, to give the most representative result.

How should I put the armband on?

  1. Sit down in a comfortable position.
  2. Sit and rest for about five minutes.
  3. Wrap the inflatable band around your arm, 2 cm above the elbow (the aluminium tube should be on top of your arm).
  4. Place your arm on a table, slightly flexed and level with your heart.
  5. When it is properly installed, begin the measurement.
  6. When inflating and deflating the armband, it is best to stay still and relaxed.

What are the symptoms of hypertension?

Arteries transport oxygen all over the body. When blood pressure is too high, arteries wear out more quickly. This invisible wear and tear can cause serious conditions such as heart attacks, chest angina, cerebral vascular disorders and liver failure.

What are the recommended values?

Arterial pressure should be below 135/85 mmHg to be considered normal. These norms have been defined by experts (The French Hypertension Society and the National Health Accreditation and Evaluation Agency). Please consult your doctor who is best-placed to tell you whether your blood pressure is acceptable or not.
